455 years to the day...

455 years ago today Bishop Hugh Latimar (along with Nicholas Ridley) was burned at the stake because of his belief that the good news of Jesus Christ should not be compromised. He preached that we are saved by grace alone through faith alone, and he desired to see this gospel proclaimed far and wide in England. Even his death is a testimony to this.

Ridley and Latimer were burned alive back to back, and Latimer (pictured above) spoke the following words to Ridley just prior to the flames reaching their bodies:

"Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man. We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out."

I believe Latimer's words to be true. The candle that was lit on October 16, 1555 has not yet gone out in England, nor will it.
